I lived in Guatemala for 13 years, with a tribe of Mayan indians, in San Miguel Acatán, north of Huehuetenango. It's still where my heart is, and it's formed a rich background for my interests in photography. These pictures range from 1981 to 2012.

Taken from a rooftop. After I climbed up there, I immediately saw this shot of the cross on a tall rock with beautiful context all around it. Taken at 200mm with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM, set at f/8 with an ISO of 200. Antigua, Guatemala.
This winding stairway in a convent just begged to have it's picture taken. The camera was set up on the floor, and with the Canon 5d Mark II I used the manual Carl Zeiss 25mm Makro-Planar 2/50 ZE, exposed for 3.2 seconds at f/22 and ISO 800. It was quite dark. Antigua, Guatemala.
Far away columns that survived the earthquake 500 years ago, purposely highlighted with a shallow depth of field. Shot at f/4, 400mm, and a Canon Extender EF 1.4x III between the camera and the lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM. The effective mm was 222. Antigua, Guatemala.

The handwork in this "ruined" facade is just phenomenal. And the dark blue sky (just before it sprinkled) and the purple flowers give it context and framing. Antigua, Guatemala.
I took this just because it plays with your mind a little. The leaves on the wall are dried banana leaves, and they lead up to a poster of one of the favorite native beer brands.
A very interesting hallway into a seafood restaurant. Notice the white fluorescent builbs on the ceiling, but with the strong green hue from the paint. Look at what they've made shelfs from for the fruit on the left: dead fluorescent tubes! Guatemala City.
Blenders, resting after their busy morning. Found these in a tiny shop downtown and asked the owner if I could take 20 mins or so to set up a shot. I'm averse to predictability and sameness in shots, so I liked the missing top on one of them and the fruit in two of them. You can see the reflection of a green plant in the first one on the right.
Guatemala City at night from "El Mirador" on the steep winding road down the Pan-American highway into Guatemala City. We stopped for a Coke and got a table at the edge of the lookout and I took it from there. Just north of Guatemala City.
